A healthy field of seven headed to the Woodlands Course at Bellevue for the first multiple group official event of the 2009
campaign. With two newcomers among the regulars, it was almost as if the LGA felt it had something to prove, as several
good performances were recorded, both from expected and surprising sources. Costa Doinbiznis grabbed his second victory
in as many starts, and posted the first sub-90 round in the LGA this season. 'The Biz' carded a birdie on the par-4 12th hole,
and only had two holes worse than bogey all day long, both double bogeys to begin the back nine. Taking second place, Dr.
Mario Blondin also birdied the 12th hole by chipping in from about 30 yards. Mario's round was unique in that he never putted
more than twice during a hole, perhaps not a rarity in golf but indeed one in the LGA. The next two scores have to be
considered somewhat surprising, given the recent performances of their owners. Chris The 9-Iron Kid broke 100 for the first
time in two seasons, shaking a huge monkey off his shoulders in the process, entering the clubhouse with a 95 which
included six pars. Chris game was only two shots better than fourth place Paul Hornsby III, who also succeeded in proving to
the newcomers that he does have some ability, a fact that would be hard to prove by reading these spaces. It was Hornsby's
first double digit round since his famous choke at the 2008 Lefty Olympics of Golf. The only LGA regular in the field unable to
break 100 was Fred Cupholders, who finished the round with a pair of sevens. Cupholders claimed to be trying out a new
technique, the standard LGA excuse for poor performances. Finishing in sixth place, with the best round by a female since Ju
Lie earlier this decade, was rookie Dominique Bozieux. Her back nine 68 effectively ruined what would have been a very
respectable LGA debut. Dominique did score a beer hole victory with a par on the par-3 16th. Rounding out the field, also
appearing in his first career LGA event, was Boo Monthley. His 150 (not the worst score in Association history by a long shot),
included four holes in double digits. His 16 on the par-4 3rd hole was especially disturbing. However, given Boo's lack of
golfing experience, the fact that he was able to complete the round with an honest score has to be considered
commendable, as well as a relief for LGA fans, officials and Mr. Monthley himself.
After a sixteen day layoff, another large field headed to an old LGA venue, Deux-Montagnes for the 7th annual Doculab Cup.
Even larger than the eight player field were the scores, with the exception of that of Hale Erwin Norman, who in spite of 38
putts managed to tame the tough course layout enough to finish in double figures, a full nine shots ahead of runner up Costa
Doinbiznis. It was Norman's first LGA appearance in 2009, which made his performance even more surprising. The real
battle on this day would be for second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth places, with second falling to a surprised Costa Doinbiznis,
whose 107 included a bogey free front nine (the LGA variety of bogey free, also free of birdies or pars) and 42 putts. In fact
Costa's front nine 62, his first nine in the 60's since his 64 front at Vaudreuil on April 17, 2005, saw him in sixth place at the
turn. Needless to say his 45 coming in was the best nine of the day. Grabbing third spot, also with a very high score, Dr.
Mario Blondin was astonished at his good fortune in finishing on the podium by one over Chris The 9-Iron Kid. Blondin putted
41 times, proving that the greens were difficult indeed. As for 9-Iron, he eked out his fourth place result by a single shot over
both Paul Hornsby III and Fred Cupholders. Chris' back to back pars on 15 and 16, in addition to his 36 putts, best of the day,
enabled him to charge past Hornsby and Cupholders at the wire. Hornsby's round started very poorly, as he trailed even LGA
rookie Tom Whatson? through three holes before settling down for a 111. 'Da Turd' four-putted the opening hole, part of his
41-putt display. Fred Cupholders injured his average against all opponents with his fifth place tie, over and above injuring his
scoring average with his version of 111. Cupholders failed to score a single par on the day. Taking seventh spot, filling in for
an absent Pietro Lewinsky for his second career LGA appearance and also second in as many weeks, Boo Monthley
established a career best with a double par 144, and also took his first ever victory against any LGA opponent, as Tom
Whatson?, making his first LGA appearance since 2007, faded at the end, nursing a sore forearm en route to a humiliating
152. Whatson? was able to chip in for a triple bogey on the opening hole, unquestionable the hightlight of Tom's day. "It's
nice to see others taking over last place", expressed Paul Hornsby III to reporters after the event. "I've spent enough time
there." Needless to say, time will be the judge as to whether Hornsby can keep his streak of events finishing out of the cellar
(currently at 4) going. "If past history is any indication, the odds are not in his favour", says Pavlo "The Greek" Hornsbidakis,
resident LGA oddsmaker and columnist.
For the third straight outing, the LGA required more than a single starting time to fulfill demand for participation in an 'official'
event. What was a first in '09 was the Association's selection of Caughnawaga as the venue. Dr. Mario Blondin took advantage
of three straight pars on the front nine, going out in 44, and held off challenges by Hale Erwin Norman and Fred Cupholders
on his way to a four shot win, Mario's third victory of the young season. For Norman, appearing in his second tournament of
2009, the 97 score was an acceptable result, but could have been much better were it not for an assortment of triple and
quadruple bogeys scattered throughout his back nine scorecard. The only other player to break 100 was top righthander Fred
Cupholders. It was Fred's first double digit round of the year, despite 41 putts and a supposedly new swing technique. Next on
the ladder of success sat Chris The 9-Iron Kid, spot on the century mark. Although Chris was able to avoid catastrophe and
only had a couple of bad holes, he also only had a couple of good holes, explaining his balanced result. Paul Hornsby III
grabbed fifth spot, after falling out of contention with a craptacular 13 on the par-4 12th. 'Da Turd' shot his way into the picture
with a fine birdie on the par-3 10th. Completing the field in sixth position was Pietro Lewinsky, disappointed with his 121
score. Before blaming his two 10's out of three par 5's, we must also give mention to the four eights which were also seen
stinking up his card. The soiling was completed with the presence of a 42-putt performance.
The calendar read May 31st, but the thermometer looked more like it was March, as vicious winds and very cool temperatures
greeted the diehard lefty trio of Dr. Mario Blondin, Chris The 9-Iron Kid and Paul Hornsby III as they returned to Les Legendes
for yet another 'official' LGA event. As was predictable given the competition and the results of the last few weeks, Dr. Mario
Blondin simply ignored the howling winds and put on a display of excellent golf, putting together a pair of 45's for his best
round of the year, and a runaway 21 stroke victory over his closest competitor, Chris The 9-Iron Kid. The doctor did not post a
single hole worse than double bogey, which is actually an accomplishment in this league. As for runner up 9-Iron Kid, though
he faded quite badly in the difficult conditions, he nevertheless rallied from 5 behind Hornsby to take second place by three. It
was not the most amazing accomplishment beating Hornsby (is it ever?). Paul posted a back nine 62 which was as ugly in
practice as it is on paper, but was worse than Chris's back even with the latter's two 8's and two 9's. If Hornsby hadn't carded
three pars on the day, his score could have been absolutely atrocious. "I thought my score was atrocious!", Hornsby defended
himself when approcahed with the idea. We should remind Mr. Hornsby that although his performance was horrible, we know,
and history has proven over and over, that he is capable of much, much worse.
