The 2002 LGA season got off to a surprisingly early start on this unseasonably warm March day, the first ever LGA event staged
during the winter. Evidence of winter was everywhere with some snow off the fairways and icy lakes, but our diehard threesome
seemed to enjoy the experience. Apart from the weather and the time of year, it was the same old, with Dr. Mario Blondin
coasting to a 17 shot victory over Costa Doinbiznis to take the season opener. Blondin kept it steady avoiding bad holes and
managing to break 100, the first double-digit round of the year. Blondin scored two pars and never worse than seven despite the
windy and very muddy conditions. Costa Doinbiznis, improving over his first round in 2001 by 21 strokes, easily held on to
runner-up spot, despite some serious slicing with his new one-iron (he was often spared by the lack of roll caused by the mud),
thanks mostly to P.P. Hornsby, who 5-putted through puddles on the 1st green, then hit his third and fifth shots onto the frozen
lake at two (where he would take a swim after attempting to retrieve his ball on thin ice...what an idiot!) on his way to a
barf-ingesting 50 through the first 6 holes, before he finally setteld down. Blondin, who fearlessly predicted a great season for
himself during the off-season, remains correct, at least for now. "You suck", Doinbiznis was heard saying to Hornsby on the 18th
green as he drained his 45th putt of the day, a disappointing debut for his new Zappa Dappa putter.
